Together We Can Do More

Key Challenges and Funding Needs

Transportation

Many individuals with mobility challenges struggle to get around because accessible public transit systems are overburdened and unreliable, forcing them to book paratransit days in advance and eliminating spontaneity from everyday life.

Whether it’s going to a movie, visiting friends, or running errands, the lack of flexible transportation options severely limits independence and social participation. Accessible vans cost over $85,000, with ongoing annual expenses of around $15,000 for fuel, insurance, and maintenance, making personal or organizational ownership financially prohibitive without donor support.

Housing & Accessibility

While some government assistance exists for accessibility renovations, it rarely covers the full cost of creating truly barrier-free living spaces. People with disabilities need homes with widened hallways and doors, accessible bathrooms and kitchens, reinforced lifts and tracks, and outdoor pathways that accommodate wheelchairs.

Everyday wear from power chairs and equipment also leads to frequent maintenance needs. The estimated cost to make a home accessible ranges from $100,000 to $200,000, making donations essential to help individuals live safely and independently in their communities.

Equipment

For people with multiple or complex disabilities, access to modern, well-maintained equipment is vital to preserving health, autonomy, and community involvement.

The required items can range from simple necessities like shower commodes to advanced technology such as customized communication devices or specialized air beds that prevent pressure ulcers. These tools are often expensive, with some exceeding $25,000, and must be regularly replaced or upgraded. Philanthropic contributions ensure that each person receives the individualized tools they need to live comfortably and participate fully in daily life.
